The story of a Christian missionary caught up in Mao's Long March.--Cover.
Alfred Bosshardt is one of the most remarkable missionaries of the twentieth century. Born in Manchester in 1897, Alfred was accepted for training by the China Inland Mission (OMF) in 1920. Within two years he departed for the huge and dangerous land of China.
At that period China was highly unstable. Local warlords controlled many areas, and the Communists and Nationalists struggled for power. All missionaries were seen as spies, and in 1934 Communist guerrillas captured Alfred and his wife Rose. Rose was released, but Alfred was forced to join the Red Army on the weary trek which became known a the Long March. He trudged 2,500 miles.
Alfred's knowledge of both Chinese and French was invaluable, since the only accurate map of the region was in French. The way he shared his knowledge, and maintained a Christlike forbearance despite frequent beatings and threats of execution, has made him a notable figure in modern Chinese history.--Back cover.
