Travel with (Opera) singer Jane Stuart Smith from the theaters of Europe and the U.S. - through her struggles, fulfillments, emptiness - to a new life that began in a tiny chalet in an Alpine Village.
Jane Stuart Smith (29/9/1925-14/1/2016) was an American opera singer who made a career on the Italian stage. After her debut at the Detroit Grand Opera Festival in 1951 she was described by the press as "a woman of commanding beauty, both of person and voice". In Italy she appeared in Milan, Palermo and Cesena, where the stage was carpeted in flowers after her performance. In 1956 she visited L'Abri Christian community in the Swiss Alps where she became a Christian. In 1959 she gave up opera and lived at L'Abri where she served as a secretary, helped to form a musical ensemble among L'Abri members, served meals to visitors and gave monthly lectures on music. In later years she returned to America where she cared for her friend Betty Carlson, the author of this book.--information taken from Sydney Morning Herald obituary dated 11 Feb. 2016.
