William Carey has been called the 'Father of Modern Missions' and leader of 'The Second Reformation.' He gave the Protestant churches the jolt into the missionary era they so desperately needed.

Carey's story is both tragic and triumphant. It is tragic as the tale of a humble cobbler and illegal immigrant to India who lost a son to tropical disease, a wife to madness, and labored seven years before seeing his first convert.

It is triumphant as the story of a servant of God who transcended unspeakable adversity, became Professor of Languages, founded an important college, translated the Scriptures into 36 Indian and Asian dialects, established scores of schools through Northern India, and blazed the way for generations of missionaries from all denominations. His story overflows with insight for all concerned about the advance of the Gospel today.
