Eric Liddell was born in China to a missionary family. He was sent to boarding school in England then university in Scotland. While at university his athletic career took off. He shot to fame during the 1924 Summer Olympics in Parish when he stood up for his Christian faith by refusing to race when his 100 metres race was scheduled for the Sunday, then winning the 400 metres race. He then returned to China and became a prisoner of war under the Japanese. The man who became known affectionately as the 'Flying Scotsman' in the end lived and died in China - thousands of miles from his native land and his athletic conquests.
