Elizabeth George does such a sweet job encouraging mothers in their role. She really emphasizes being in the Word as a mother, looking for opportunities to speak truth to your daughter, of the importance of praying on her behalf, and of the value of speaking lots of encouragement to their hearts. Some portions were not as applicable, such as her emphasis on making church attendance a high priority, as that is already a well ingrained habit in our lives, but it did encourage me to look for more opportunities to serve in the church together. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it for all mothers of girls!

A powerful tool to use in raising our daughters for God.
The thought that stood out to me, and that really stomped on my toes is that it all starts with me. How am I living my life, am I letting God work through me? Am I seeking after God with all my heart?

I’m usually a fan of Elizabeth George’s books (I own many of them), and I was looking forward to reading this one but I just couldn’t finish it. I gave it longer (50%) than I give to most books I don’t enjoy, but I found it too simple. A classic primer on Christian parenting, in some ways. But not very specific to girls.

I also disagreed with most of the discipline chapter (motivations seemed skewed, but I realize this was written quite a bit ago). Full of helpful Scripture and very practical, though, so I’m sure this title will be helpful to some, perhaps as one of the first parenting books you read.

Raising a Daughter after God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George is a must read for any mother concerned about her daughter's spiritual life. George, who is well-known for her devotionals for women, including A Woman after God's Own Heart, uses her own experience as the mother of two daughters to help moms trying to get it right. She first encourages women to start with their own relationship with God by reading the Bible regularly, memorizing Scripture and starting a prayer journal specifically for recording prayers about your daughter. She breaks down our role as a mom into several different roles: cheerleader, teacher, shepherd and more. Each role gets a chapter (in some cases two) with real life examples, practical advice that any mom can do, and Scripture supporting her position. George recognizes that no mother is perfect, including her, and her writing voice is always encouraging and positive, She gives moms a place to start, no matter where they may be in their daughter's life: infancy to school girl to teenager, she doesn't want them to be afraid to begin. The chapters are easily read in a few minutes each night and each ends with a few activities to help moms dig a little deeper.

This book was full of good reminders and encouragements in how to raise our daughters (and really most of it could have applied to our sons as well) in the Lord. I liked how she'd have the first part of the chapter give the Biblical foundation for the principal she was talking about and the next section would be talking about how it really looks practically. She'd end the chapter with questions to really examine your own life and how you're doing in the different areas. Some of it was pretty basic and foundational and I think her passion and heart is for mom's who are maybe new believers as she wasn't raised in a Christian home but became a believer when she had young kids and really had to learn as she went. In spite of that there was a ton I could take and apply and just get some inspiration for how to point my girls (and guy) to the Lord and what an important & valuable role I have in that area of my kids life.

I enjoyed this book very much. It didn't give advice or information that was a surprise but it gave many reminders of how I should be responding and encouraging my children. Most of the advice can be transferred to sons as well as daughters but girls definitely look up and copy mom's example more. I liked how the chapters were broken down to the various "tasks" of a mom. some of them I hadn't really considered before (cheerleader, social secretary, shepherd).
As usual Elizabeth George offers many examples, illustrations, and Bible references to go with her points and she's easy to read and glean much from. I plan to give this to expectant mothers I know and I recommend it.

It would be easy to read this and become overwhelmed and discouraged about how you fall short BUT Elizabeth George has the gift of encouragement and I came away inspired, uplifted and challenged, knowing that with Gods strength I can be the mum He wants me to be. Children are truly a gift from God and with the privilege comes responsibility - and God equips us for the task and gives us joy as we do it! This was written with daughters in mind but a lot can be applied to bringing up sons too.

Great book for moms with common sense, Christian values. My girls are still young but I wish I would have read this when they were little.

Very practical with lots of good suggestions at the end of each chapter. Now to find a mom mentor! (Other than my own mom and MIL) George has been one of my faves since becoming a wife and mom!

In a nonjudgmental way, George has hit the mark on parenting daughters. She does not specify which age group as it is a lifelong journey of parenting our daughters. She begins the book with an analogy of a shepherd and how he uses one particular sheep to call the others to follow she symbolizes it as a mother we want to do everything in our power to lead our daughters close to Christ. She focuses mainly on what we can do as parents to follow God hard and in this way be a role model to our daughters. I have nothing to fault this book with.

I don't have the right personality to really appreciate what this book has to offer. Mostly it just made me feel like a failure. And it was really hard to understand why it was geared specifically toward moms of girls. There's very little in here that's actually gender-specific. I'm sure there's an audience for which this book is a well-loved part of their home library. Unfortunately, I'm not that audience.

Raising a Daughter After God's Own Heart was nothing earth shattering, nothing I haven't been taught before. But it was a lovely encouragement and call to faithfulness during a difficult season, a solid examination of "the basics" that we all need to be reminded of.

Often times when we first become mothers, we look for the instruction manual. I wish that I had found this particular title much sooner in my journey as a mom. Elizabeth George does an excellent job of encouraging and spurring me on as a mother. This book is specifically about daughters and therefore includes insight into the beautiful relationship between a mother and her daughter.
There are several different examples of the way that we can view our lives, insuring that there will be at least one that will resonant with you. George does a great job of showing how important it is to pray for our daughters as well as how easy it is to fit that time into our schedules. I enjoyed the fact that she never makes it sound easy, but reminds over and over again the worth involved in the work that is done as a mother.
This book is a great encouragement to me as a mother, prayer warrior, preacher, teacher, bell sheep, and as a sister in Christ. This book will help give you direction if you are floundering in the reality of motherhood. It will give you direction and encouragement for the journey.

I received this title from Harvest House Publishers through Net Galley for review purposes.

I originally picked up this book because of the title (and because I have read other good books by the author). I had realized that I have read many more books about raising boys then raising girls so I thought this would be a good start in balancing that out. On that aspect I was actually rather disappointed. There was only a couple chapters that was directed mainly toward raising daughters and though I did enjoy them I think a more appropriate title would have been "Raising a Child After God's Own Heart". However, I can understand why the author chose that title as she herself only had daughters. Besides all that it really is a good book about parenting in general. I didn't experience any major revelations while reading it but it did offer some very good reminders!

I would give this 3.5 stars . . . I saw this book in our library and picked it up: and was pleasantly surprised. The author is not LDS and so there are of course some doctrinal differences, and a few things I didn't agree with, but the overall message is great counsel for anyone who believes in God, and is trying to raise her daughter (and sons) accordingly. I came away encouraged and inspired to do and be better - and with several solid goals to work on for myself and my children.

I'm stilling this book. It's pretty basic. Meaning, it's good for a young mother in the faith. If you know a mother who's a new believer, this would be a good book for her.

I've read many books by Elizabeth George and loved all of them. however, this specific book left me disappointed. it doesn't go deep and she constantly pushes for youth groups, childrens Sunday school and sending children to school. it's not true that your child has to visit those to become a well adjusted adult.
