Finding common ground and earning the right to be heard is the secret to lifestyle evangelism. In this classic bestseller, now released as a mass-market paperback, Dr. Joe Aldrich shows us how we can build genuine, caring relationships with nonbelievers that will open their hearts to the gospel message. The author's approach is biblical, practical, and natural. Lifestyle Evangelism is the definitive work in introducing people to the Savior in a way that displays God's authentic love for the lost.
As a missionary currently on staff with Pioneers International preparing for full time ministry to the country of Albania, Life-Style Evangelism has helped open my eyes to different methods of effective evangelism. For the most part of my Christian life, I thought of evangelism strictly from a proclamational/confrontational perspective, not realizing that relational evangelism not only exists, but actually works! My family will be serving in a country in which openly proclaiming the Gospel on the streets of Albania is typically frowned upon and can most certainly lead to potentially dangerous outcomes in this Muslim dominated country. I am glad God has led me to the reading of this book, Life-Style Evangelism. I am now convinced that this form of evangelism will become the most effective method for sharing and showing the love of Christ to a people who do not yet know Him. I have recently learned that the people group that we will be serving and ministering to is a syncretistic people group, meaning they adopt and embrace many spiritual beliefs, Christianity being only one of them. We also learned that the only way to pierce through the other dark doctrines of false religions and gods that they embrace is through saturation… saturating them with the Gospel in all avenues of life, not just verbally, but relationally, physically, and tangibly. And it is through lifestyle evangelism that I believe can and will be best accomplished. I look forward to putting into practice much of what was taught in this great book, not only here in the United States, but overseas in the country of Albania.
Lifestyle Evangelism is not exactly what you would think. The title and the early chapters seem to set the book up as a step-by-step checklist of *doing* evangelism. Although all believers are to "do the work of an evangelist, " Aldrich turns to the compelling case for the preparation of the messenger rather than the perfection of the message and method. The bulk of this book concentrates on the beauty of a life harmonized with the beauty of the gospel.
Even though this book is over 40 years old, and some of the language is a bit dated, the basic principles are as true now as they were then. The book is a very good primer on how to approach evangelism on a low-key, non-threatening basis, while still being effective and true to the work that God has called us to do.
There was some confusion on vocabulary. Being a good witness is something we are all called to do. Evangelism is specifically a proclamation of the Gospel. Witnessing is about lifestyle, community and service. SO i think this is a book about witnessing of which Aldrich had plenty of good things to say.
Besides having the worst cover I have seen in awhile, the book was pretty good. Being a beautiful bride of Christ is the context of witnessing to and evangelizing the world.
Living what we are preaching is the best witness to our preaching.
I was very surprised by this book. I thought it would be as outdated as the cover and was completely wrong. Great insights, very relevant, and a good read.
