It is precisely because this book is aimed at teachers of children that I think it is a terrific book for adults. Anyone who can communicate profound theological content at the level of children, without dumbing it down, understands his subject thoroughly. De Graaf reminds his readers again and again that the Bible is God's self-revelation and the grace of this revelation is always mediated through the Redeemer. Therefore, Jesus - as the Mediator of the covenant of grace - is always the central figure of all the Bible stories. The human characters are the backdrop for God self-revelation in Christ. This is a profound insight, which it extremely helpful for teaching children the stories of the Bible. This is Volume 1 of 4. It covers Bible history from Genesis through Joshua.
This book is the first an older series of four volumes, written for parents or teachers, rather than the children themselves. The author shows how every Bible story moves God's redemptive purpose for His people a little further along. We don't always think this way about our children's Bible stories, unless we are purposeful about looking for it and teaching it.
De Graaf, Simon Gerrit (1889-1955). A minister in the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands, assocated especially with the emphasis on a redemptive-historical understanding of the Bible. I'm reading this first of a four book series as part of my morning worship with the children.
