The purpose of this book is great and for the most part it is very well done, helping navigate symbolism, cultural meanings and showing truth. My one problem (and it happens in the very first chapter, which set a tone for the whole book) was Carson's refusal to take a stand on Creation. He mentions that there are many thoughts about the creation of the world and how some of it is symbolic and some may be literal. Then goes on to describe the overarching might, power and unfathomable abilities of God. No doubt there are symbolic elements in the Creation section, but if God is all powerful, than creating everything how He said He did, in a single, simple week is completely believable and not something a theologian should dodge. (This is the total reason for 4 stars, and I would have preferred it to be 3.5.)
Content notes: No issues; rape, murder and other sins are mentioned as moral exercises are explored, but not dwelt on in detail.
